This is perhaps the most frequently used word in the weight loss / weight gain vocabulary.

It is quite common to overhear people talking about their struggles – or triumphs over the holiday bulge or love handles, in terms of whether their metabolism is working, or not. Doctors often refer to metabolism when they try to explain why starvation and water-loss diets don’t work.

With all of the focus around this rather daunting and biologically charged word, you would assume that most people actually understand it. Or at least have some fundamental knowledge when it comes to how to speed up their metabolism, right?

Towards Understanding Metabolism

Regrettably, many people don’t even understand the concept of metabolism and metabolic change.

There is so much information floating around out there that there’s bound to be some confusion and conflicting messages. And, understandably, many people mistake their own weight gain and weight loss experiences as a matter of metabolic change.  Sometimes this is true, and sometimes it isn’t.

For example, there are scientific ways to increase your metabolism, and thus enable your body to burn more calories. Eating certain foods more frequently is one way to do this.  Another way to visibly lose weight – at least on a perceived, temporary level – is to sit in a steam room for a few hours.  I’ll cover these more closely later in this book.

Whereas eating the right foods is a real, proven weight loss method through increased metabolic change, the steam room method is just temporary because the lost weight is merely water and will return as swiftly as it “melted-away”.

The point to remember here is that not all weight loss or weight gain is connected to metabolism (as with the steam room example). 

Another reason that people might be confused is because there are a lot of food and supplement companies on the market who don’t want you to know fact from fiction. They want you to believe that eating their “low-fat” or “diet” foods or using their products is going to somehow speed up your metabolism.

Presuming, of course, that you aren’t overdoing it, your body will begin converting food (e.g., calories) into energy. This is a “metabolic process” called catabolism.

So, the metabolism, “metabolic process”, is constantly taking care of two seemingly opposite functions: anabolism that uses energy to create cells, and catabolism that breaks down cells to create energy.

This is how the metabolism earned its reputation as a harmonizer. It brings together these apparently conflicting functions and does so in an optimal way that enables the body to create cells as needed, and break them down, again as needed.

Metabolism and Weight Loss

By now, you should have a sense of how metabolism relates to weight loss by breaking cells down and transforming them into energy through catabolism.  To understand this process even more clearly, let’s look at an important player in the weight loss game.

Calories are simply units of measure. They aren’t actually things in and of themselves; they are labels for other things, just like how an inch really isn’t anything, but it measures the distance between two points.

The glutes are made up of three muscles, the Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus. Each plays a role in stabilizing, supporting and mobilizing the legs, hips and lower half of the body.

Without getting too technical, there are three planes of motion glute muscles need to experience to grow.

If you want shapely glutes, you have to train all THREE planes of motion to get fullness – vertical, horizontal and rotational.

Most people do squats and deadlifts which are vertical movements. You still need to do lateral movements and twisting movements.

So you see why most programs fail because they don’t target all three planes of motion.

You also need to stress each muscle using different exercise strategies.

Let’s smash another myth… that super long gym workouts are required to build your backside.

We’ve already learned that you’re going to be training your glutes on their own day. You can get an extremely effective workout for one muscle group in as little as 15-minutes since you’re targeting a specific area.

Sure if someone is training their entire upper or lower body that can take some time, but a killer glute workout will be counter-productive if exceeding 15-minutes.

Secondly, if you have a gym membership that’s great but not a requirement.

There are lots of exercises you can to add resistance with your bodyweight or other common items that you can use in your workouts when exercising at home or when traveling.

If you have a gym membership that’s great, but if you don’t you can still develop your glutes with bodyweight exercises at home.

Study after study proves you can achieve serious growth through bodyweight exercises instead of heaving weights. You really can grow your glutes without setting foot in a gym (although adding resistance can speed up progress).

One study proved bodyweight exercises – hip thrusts – activated a comparable level of lower limb muscles as machine exercises . Another study suggested it was possible to improve muscle power and growth through bodyweight exercise with blood flow restriction . A further study showed muscle growth occurred without the need for resistance at all.

What these studies show are the benefits of incorporating bodyweight exercises without the injury risks associated with lifting weights.

Too much advice focuses on complicated movements that never really hit your glutes. Or the need to use 25 hard-to-find machines in your gym. I want to show you that seriously building your butt is as simple as a well-considered bodyweight plan.

There’s a catch, though. None of what I’ve talked about above will give you the results you want if you’re training a dormant muscle…

Your glutes are asleep. And the reason?

Endless studies show sitting hurts our physical health. It’s a “silent killer”. Unlike a sports injury, you don’t realize the extent of the damage done until it’s too late.

The only time we notice there could be an issue is when we sit for too long and get a numb butt. “Dead butt syndrome” or gluteal amnesia occurs when your glutes stop firing as they should.

The technical term for this is “inhibition”. When you sit for a prolonged period, your glutes aren’t activated. They get weak, and it has consequences for the rest of your body. Other muscles are forced to compensate for your glute weakness, and this may result in lower back, knee or hip pain.

They prevent your gluteal muscles from activating so you never perform at 100%. You can’t train a dormant muscle.

What’s worse is that you can suffer from this even if you exercise regularly. You can’t ‘out-exercise’ the effect of sitting.

Our muscles are dormant, so we need to wake them up. Time spent training a dormant muscle is wasted. That’s why you never get the gains you expect, despite your hard work.

When you look in the mirror wondering where your butt is and what more you can do, this is it. You need to WAKE UP your glutes.

The key to unlocking your glutes is its opposing muscle, the hip flexor. You see, sitting tightens the hip flexors preventing the glutes from firing.

To fire your glutes, we use a two-step protocol. It involves: a) dealing with tight hip flexors first and b) then re-activating the glutes.

Restorative stretching lengthens the muscle fiber to return the hip flexors to their original length.

To re-activate the glutes, we turn to a tool of physical therapists use to rehabilitate injured athletes: neuromuscular activation. This technique restores the mind-muscle link between your brain and your glutes, lost when you sit for too long and your glutes “switch off”.

Stretching and muscle activation in that order is the ONLY way to kick your glutes into action from being dormant.

The good news. It only takes an additional three to five minutes of stretches and activation exercises to hit 100% of your potential. No matter what your goal is, adding a “Wake Up Protocol” gets you there faster, safer and probably a lot easier.

What actually is inflammation?

I used to suffer from hemochromatosis. It was a nasty condition and, to be honest, my memories of it are all bad.

Until a few years ago, hemochromatosis – or HCT – was something that you have to manage over the rest of your life – with regular, never-ending hospital trips and invasive, unpleasant treatments.

Yet after years of battling HCT I’m past all that now.

I’ve been clear for a little over 3 years. I’ve not been back to the hospital at all in that time except for an annual checkup – and to make sure my iron levels are, indeed, well within safe ranges.

I was recently reminded of my journey out of the HCT nightmare as I watched a documentary about gene therapy.

It’s fascinating stuff. Gene therapy is a huge deal – some gene therapies are already achieving jaw-dropping results for people with previously untreatable illnesses.

The documentary grabbed my attention because when I was suffering HCT I’d used a natural form of gene therapy to get well.

Gene therapy is based on the simple fact that faulty genes can cause us illnesses – but they don’t necessarily have to.

All too often, it is lifestyle factors – the things we do day to day – that determines whether a particular gene switches on to create actual illness.

And if it does… then it can be repaired and the illnesses it causes can be undone.

The scientific study of how to undo genetic illnesses – like HCT – is called epigenetics.

And it’s thanks to epigenetics that I don’t have HCT any more.

Epigenetics is a multi-billion dollar area of research, studied throughout the world and funded by health institutions, universities and by governments.

It shows us that we can directly affect a gene’s damaging behavior so that it no longer hurts us.

Now, you already know more about epigenetics than you think. In fact, if you currently suffer from HCT you’re a perfect example of epigenetics at work!

You possibly know that to have HCT you need an ‘HCT gene’ from your mom and another from your dad.

But, as your doctor will have explained, lots of people have both these genes. Yet lots of them don’t get HCT.

Epigenetics looks for this missing link in diseases like HCT. It asks the question,

‘What is it that makes the ‘HCT gene’ devastate some lives – yet be completely harmless to others?’

The answer to that question has been found.

It’s because certain genes act one way on some people… and another way on other people. Putting this in medical jargon, the gene ‘expresses’ one way with Bob, for example, and a completely different way with Mary.

How a gene expresses – that is, how the gene affects you – goes on to determine whether you get ill or not.

So identical twins can have identical genes – yet different genetic illnesses. And this is because although the genes themselves are the same… the way they express for each twin can be very different.

If you have hemochromatosis it’s not just because of the genes you inherited from your parents.

Something else – some missing link – was making those genes express in a way that creates HCT in your body.

The missing link is now known and it shows us a path out of the HCT nightmare. And that’s the path I took back into full and vibrant health.

Now that scientists know what causes HCT we finally have the power to directly influence those causes. And that’s exactly what I learned to do.

I made barely noticeable but very powerful alterations to some specific things I did… things that my HCT gene was strongly affected by… and then watched my iron readings start to tumble.

The details of epigenetics are very complex.

But for me as a sufferer of HCT the way of using this powerful discipline was very straightforward. And it changed my life forever.

So, a bit of a disclaimer here. I’m not some scientific whizzkid who worked this out by myself!

I stumbled onto this information by accident. I read about a treatment for HCT on an old online health forum some years ago.

Some ex-HCT sufferers were describing how they had followed a program created by a science-based natural health practitioner called Shelly Manning.

They’d made some simple – but specific – changes to their diets – which had made profound changes to how their HCT behaved.

First, excess iron started draining from their blood and tissues. They experienced gradually falling iron levels month after month – without a single medical treatment from their hospital.

Even when I switched to giving blood monthly the dizziness remained. But I also started experiencing heart irregularities and bad pains in my stomach.

In the end, phlebotomy had to be replaced by iron chelation.

Which meant taking drugs that bind with excess iron in the blood. The chemicals in the drug make the iron less harmful – and so easier to eliminate from the body.

But this is another unnatural process – and it over time it produced new, unwelcome side-effects including vomiting, diarrhea and nasty skin rashes.

I became very worried about how all this was going to end. My doctor was very supportive but he’d seen this all before. Treatments start out okay but they don’t always stay that way.

In truth, the standard treatments for HCT were not nice even when they work. But for me they were no longer even working – while the side-effects were becoming increasingly nastier.

And I faced a lifetime of this.

I was feeling increasingly stuck. And the more I worried the more willing I was to look elsewhere for help. And that’s exactly how I found myself listening to respected natural health practitioners like Shelly Manning.

Which was probably one of the best decisions I ever made, to be honest.

So despite initial scepticism about the claims of ex-HCT sufferers I decided to do what they did. I got a copy of the same program and I followed it to the letter.

Hepcidin is like an on/off switch. It stops iron absorption when we have enough iron. It keeps iron levels healthy. It stops iron overload.

It stops hemochromatosis.

I had HCT because my faulty gene was not producing hepcidin. So I couldn’t shut down iron absorption when I had enough iron in my body.

And this is why you currently have HCT. You’re absorbing dangerous amounts of iron from food because your gene doesn’t have the hepcidin to stop that absorption.

Why doesn’t your HCT gene have the hepcidin it needs to avoid over-absorbing iron?

Tackle this problem and it’s all over. So long, HCT.

It all comes down to a simple mechanism that takes place in, of all places, your gut.

You may already be familiar with the discovery that our gut environment contains trillions of good, beneficial bacteria.

If you have HCT it’s because your HCT gene is unable to stop you from absorbing excess iron. It needs hepcidin and it doesn’t have any.

Why doesn’t it have any hepcidin?

Because it can’t manufacture it.

To manufacture hepcidin we need a substance called butyrate. But there isn’t enough butyrate in your body to make the hepcidin you need. And without the butyrate you can’t have the hepcidin.

Butyrate makes hepcidin. Your genes use hepcidin to stop your body absorbing excess iron.

If you don’t have the butyrate you can’t have that hepcidin.

Make the butyrate and you get the hepcidin. It’s that simple.

Guess who makes butyrate?

Yes, your gut bacteria make butyrate.

Specific bacteria are responsible for producing butyrate. If you don’t have enough of that bacteria then you don’t get any butyrate… so you don’t get any hepcidin.

Fix those bacteria. Make them healthy again. Let them get on with their job of producing butyrate…

So how do we fix our gut bacteria?

However, give them exactly what they need in the quantities and combinations that they need it… and all that health-giving, life-preserving bacteria will flourish.

And this is what I did. I followed the program, did the right things and literally ate my problems away.

Make no mistake. This is not about ‘healthy eating’ – not in the sense we hear about on television and in magazines. In many respects, it’s far easier.

Because I’m the kind of person who trusts doctors unquestioningly. If a doctor can’t beat whatever you’re suffering from then it can’t be beaten. Plain and simple. I realize that can sound dumb but that’s how I am.

When I was finally free of hypothyroidism I changed that view. I had to.

Because the essence of the problem is this: doctors tend to treat only the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

I used to believe that once you had chronic kidney disease then that was it… you were pretty much stuck for life.

I thought there was not much you could do – except tweak it as best you can and hope to goodness that it didn’t get worse.

Maybe you’ve heard the same.

I really believed it too.

But I don’t any more. 

Because of something my doctor showed me I now know there’s an awful lot you can do to manage CKD – and what you can do turned out to be literally life-changing.

CKD isn’t a life-sentence

I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease – CKD – just over 2 years ago.

My doctor explained that there is a number of reasons why we get CKD. But it was always caused by something else that was already going wrong in the body.

Diabetes, heart disease, various cardiovascular diseases, being very overweight and so on. They can all cause CKD.

High blood pressure was the cause of my CKD.

Your CKD may have a different cause. But the result is the same.

My doctor told me that chronic kidney disease can’t be tackled directly. Instead, doctors address the diseases that cause it in the first place.

Which, for me, meant tackling my blood pressure problem.

It might be a different fight for you depending on what’s causing your own CKD.

But whatever the cause, the strategy is the same: alleviate the problems of the CKD itself while addressing the underlying disease that is causing the CKD in the first place.

Unfortunately, using standard methods CKD can – and often does – get progressively worse. As it gets worse it becomes a significantly more threatening disease.

There was no way I could just accept that. No way.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to accept it. I did something else instead.

Which has meant that these days I can’t remember what CKD even feels like anymore.

But before I jump ahead of myself, let me make this important point.

My doctor taught me something very worrying about CKD.

The disease has 5 stages. Stage 1 is the mildest.

Stage 5 is as serious as it gets.

Stage 5 can shorten a person’s life by many, many years.

You do not want to reach stage 5. 

My CKD was at stage 3 when it was discovered. Most of us only discover our CKD when it’s already well underway.

The danger here is that CKD gets progressively worse. Doctors find it very difficult to halt CKD’s progress into stages 4 and then 5.

At stage 5 you are plugged into a dialysis machine. You hope and pray for a suitable kidney donor so that you can squeeze some more years out of life… before finally succumbing. 

Dialysis machines and kidney transplants were not for me. 

I didn’t care that other people coped with being strapped to a dialysis machine for hours on end four or five times a week.

That’s them. It’s not me.

And I didn’t care that, for people lucky enough to find kidney donors, better transplant techniques meant that they weren’t dying so quickly afterwards. 

As far as I was concerned… once you reach the kidney dialysis machines and transplant stage your days are numbered.

I had – and still have – many years of life ahead of me.

And I wanted those years to be healthy, happy, enjoyable.

Not ill, diseased… watching my clock run down.

I felt very low, to be honest.

My doctor gave me the standard spiel: we can handle the symptoms, we can try to address underlying causes… with the right meds you could lead a fairly normal life. And so on.

I told him this wasn’t good enough. I didn’t want my life cut short with a disease that – at least officially – had no way of being reversed.

I didn’t want to watch myself deteriorate week by week. I didn’t want to be plugged into a dialysis machine. I didn’t want a transplant.

And I didn’t want to die early.

I was very upset. I didn’t know what to do next.

But I didn’t want to just do nothing.

I’ve known my doctor since college. He’s a trusted friend. He told me to come back at the end of the day and we could go for a coffee and a chat.

He had something important to tell me.

Well, what my doctor told me that afternoon was jaw-dropping.
