I know – I’ve been there.

At its worst, the pain affected every aspect of my sleeping and waking life.

I’m not ashamed to admit that at times it made me cry.

When I read that some sufferers become so distressed by the condition that they fall into depression, I wasn’t even slightly surprised.

When I was first diagnosed, I did not realize how badly TMJ disrupts people’s lives. Over time, I found out.

Which specialist is right for you?

If the diagnosis is tricky and the source of the pain is difficult – or impossible – to pin down then… you may as well roll a dice.

What was shocking to me – and it took me quite a while to realize this – was that the experts I was seeing didn’t actually know how to remedy TMJ.

To their credit, most of them didn’t pretend that they did.

But it was so incredibly frustrating…

On the one hand, they were honest enough to admit the causes were varied and not properly understood.

Yet, on the other hand, they’d recommend a fix that they could do…

…but which would cost so many dollars…

while admitting they couldn’t offer any assurance they’d work!

I still remember my initial horror at the realization that, effectively…

Because each specialist was limited as to what he or she could offer me.

They could only recommend something they were capable of doing – not necessarily something that would definitely work.

I was the piggy in the middle being pushed here and there.

I just had to cross my fingers and do as I was told.

On the one hand, I am in pain, my health is falling apart. And with it, my life is slipping away.

On the other hand, I was nearly out of money. My savings had dwindled very quickly.

Again, this isn’t an unusual situation for sufferers.

The cause is more complex, more interconnected, more subtle.

Christian interviewed more and more TMJ sufferers.

He listened to what they told him. And he asked specific, direct questions.

He started to uncover things that a dentist or a neurologist simply would never have thought to ask about.

To be brutally frank, I had nothing to lose.

When the ones I tried didn’t work Christian reminded me that the muscle and bone structure in your face and jaw area is intricate.

It needs targeted work in order to affect it.

Too often a person tries the movement in the video, it doesn’t work – because on its own it pretty much can’t – and then they give it up.

Along with all the other remedies they’ve tried.

And this is where the real disasters occur.

Again, this is something that I now understood: TMJ is a body problem. Its source is not entirely at the jaw but around it and below it.

It’s the tackling of TMJ at the level of the upper body – and not just the jaw – that is transforming endless pain into relief.

Which is pretty much why my TMJ reduced and then disappeared so quickly once I started Christian’s program.

This was frustrating too.

Not only could I not determine whose exercises were actually effective…. I had to do endless Google searches in order to try to piece enough information together that I could make sense of any of it.

I pretty much failed in the end.

Because I am not able to judge which information is helpful, which is useless – and which might actually cause me more pain.

Really, I wanted this all worked out for me.

I didn’t want to have to think about it.

I wanted to be told what to do. I’d do it and then see what happened.

Of all the memories I have about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) two stand out most clearly:

I have to admit, the journey between having NAFLD and no longer having NAFLD wasn’t an overnight one.

And when I say it gets worse I mean it gets really, seriously worse. You know what I’m referring to, don’t you?

There are four recognized stages that your fatty liver can move through:

a build-up of excess fat in the liver that, initially, can be relatively harmless – but only if it stays like this. But if you don’t address the problem… it has little reason to stay harmless.

Nonalcoholic steato hepatitis (NASH)

A more serious form of fatty liver where there is inflammation in the liver. This is caused by not properly addressing your fatty liver when it first started being fatty.

The persistent inflammation at the NASH stage leads to scarring of the liver tissue.

Ongoing scarring of the liver has caused it to shrink and become lumpy. The damage is permanent, irreversible and can will lead to liver failure and liver cancer.

So the insight here is clear – and it hit me like a lead weight:

I don’t actually have some static, unchanging condition called fatty liver disease.

What’s really happening is that as a sufferer of fatty liver you’re moving through this disease, slowly transitioning from one stage… to a worse one.

In other words, the disease we’ve currently got is only today’s snapshot of a process that’s underway in our bodies. It’s the disease we could end up with that’s the real cause for alarm.

And this isn’t an exaggeration. Liver disease is taking an increasingly worsening toll on our society. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of deaths caused by liver disease and cirrhosis has risen every year since 2007.

Worse, fatty liver is associated with an increased risk of other serious health problems – including kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

So I suddenly found myself with a disease that is now among the top 15 causes of deaths for Americans.

When I first saw all this I panicked a bit. I felt this was starting to look like some sort of death sentence. LIke I was on a conveyor belt being carried to a horrible future.

Then I calmed down. I took some deep breaths and engaged my brain.

I knew what I was going to do.

I was going to find out which were the most effective meds and then speak to my doctor about them.

I would examine my options for treatments in case my fatty liver became even fattier.

And I’d see who the best surgeons were if, goodness forbid, things went really bad and, perhaps, I’d need surgery to trim off the fat.

All good plans, I thought.

Now I had to let that sink in for a few moments.

My doctor looked quite grim when she told me that the only safe way to reduce the fat in my liver was to change my lifestyle.

Lifestyle had caused the damage. Lifestyle would have to fix it. There are no drugs for this.

No medicine to drink. No tablet to take. No pill to pop.

I couldn’t accept that. There’s a pill for everything – if only to relieve some of the symptoms.

She told me vitamin E had been used in some of the more serious fatty liver cases.

I could take lifestyle measures to reduce the fat.

Or I could just let it progress – and so work its way through the 4 stages I just described. With a possible terminal condition at the end of it.

My doctor told me I would have to lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise… and so on.

That’s good advice generally but… what does it actually mean?

What is healthy eating? To me it usually means eating salads and going hungry.

I went online to nail this down this healthy eating business – and I found such contradictory information that after an afternoon of searching and reading all I really learned was ‘eat less sugar, eat more vegetables’. That’s about all anyone could agree on.

On top of that, I have to admit: I’m an average cook. I don’t want super complicated recipes and meal plans that have me in the kitchen for hours on end.

And I’m not an exercise sort of person either. I lead a busy life and I want to spend my spare time relaxing – not lifting heavy weights at the gym or running endless hours around the park.

I don’t want liver disease. I don’t want liver cancer. I don’t want to die.

How quickly can I improve my pull-up numbers on your program?

It depends on a ton of factors like your starting point, conditioning level, skill level with the exercises, body weight, body composition, age, recovery ability, and time available for training – not to mention your mental toughness and work ethic, among many other things. So, there is no definitive number or percentage I could give you.

I can say that beginners tend to experience more rapid results than advanced trainees, and it’s not uncommon for them to double, triple, or even quadruple their results in the first month alone. And to date, I’ve had not one, but two, beginner-level beta-testers quintuple their results, going from 1-5 pull-ups and 2-10 pull-ups, respectively, in just the first month on the program. So, it just depends.

The bottom line is that you’ll get out of this program whatever you put into it. Keep in mind that working hard on a good program will yield far better results than a mild effort on a perfect program. Luckily, you can be the one who works hard on a great program that is customized to your needs for optimal results.

How long is the program and what do I do after I’ve finished it?

There are three primary phases in the program, and each one is four weeks long. So, the official program is 12 weeks long, or about three months when accounting for rest and recovery time. However, if you don’t have a full three months to commit to pull-up training, there is also a chart to help you modify the program based on how much time you do have available. So, if you only have one or two months available to focus on pull-ups – instead of the full three months – there are different program schedules for you to follow instead.

There is also a fourth phase of the program for maintaining your results (i.e. the maintenance phase), which can be done indefinitely, but like all training programs, it probably won’t be effective forever.
There are further instructions for what to do after you’ve completed the program inside of the program manual.

How often will I have to train and how long do the workouts take?

It depends. The short answer is that most people will need to spend between 10-20 minutes of training per workout for most of the program.

During the first phase of the program, you’ll be instructed to perform pull-ups on your own schedule, whenever you can make time for them, for several days per week. Now, whether your sets are spread across the course of an entire day (e.g. one set every hour or two), or just an evening/morning, or a workout at the gym, or even just over the course of an hour at home (e.g. every 5 minutes), it’s entirely up to you. And if you think I’m just giving you free reign to do whatever you want, I am, but with a certain set of parameters to ensure you succeed. And again, the instructions are quite clear on how to customize it to your schedule to help you match the program to your needs and make the most of your training.

In phases two and three, you’ll perform two or three workouts per week, and most of the workouts will take between 10-20 minutes. There are a couple of pyramid-style workouts that may take longer for advanced trainees who can perform a lot of repetitions. But ultimately, you’re in charge of how long your workouts are. That’s the nature of a customizable program.

Is this a high-intensity training program?

Yes and no, since it depends on which phase of the program you’re in. All of the workouts in the first phase are low to moderate intensity sessions, and you will be instructed not to train anywhere near high intensity. During the second phase of the program, the workouts are mostly moderate intensity sessions, with a few sets being near-max efforts during some of the workouts. And finally, some workouts will absolutely require max or near-max intensity levels, particularly in the third and final phase of the program.

Do I need any special equipment or a gym membership to follow the program?

All you really need is a place to do pull-ups. A pull-up bar is ideal, and preferably one that you’ll have access to regularly. There is some other equipment that is recommended for certain situations, such as a resistance band for performing assisted pull-ups, but all other equipment is optional and not necessary to complete the program.
