The Generative Fill AI feature, introduced not too long ago in Adobe Photoshop, is one of the best additions. Working like any other AI image generation device, it lets you do all sorts of fun and artistic things like filling empty areas in your image, removing unwanted parts, and more.
Alternatively, if you happen to encounter errors similar to Generative Fill disabled, as confirmed in the screenshot below, you will surely be disappointed.
Here’s how you can restore or enable the feature if it’s disabled in your Adobe Photoshop app.
Generative Fill in Photoshop works best when you have a specific area; otherwise, it will be grayed out if you use the default setting.
For example, in the image below, the area in front of which is selected is grayed out, but this does not mean that the feature is not active.
You’ve probably already identified an area you want to edit: you’ll notice that the feature is no longer grayed out.
Another way to make sure it is disabled is to select an area in the image, then right-click to access the context menu and check if it is disabled.
If the feature is disabled, it doesn’t matter what happens. So let’s start diagnosing and see if we can fix the problem.
First, make sure that Photoshop installed in your software supports the Generative Fill feature. You will have Photoshop fashion 25.0 or later installed to start using Generative Fill right away.
To check when you are using the correct type of fashion that helps generative filling, inside the menu bar, go to Give a hand > Machine data.
You will need to be logged in to your Inventive Cloud app or Photoshop to use the Generative Fill feature.
To make sure you are signed in, in Photoshop, transfer to Lend a handand click on Registration… when you haven’t.
For most of those who have logged in, the result should look something like this:
Effective January 17, 2024, Adobe has imposed limits on the generative credit score rating that is renewable every 30 days on select plans. In Photoshop, you will lose 1 credit score rating for every generative fill feature used once. Adobe says that even though you are running out of credit, the generative fill feature will still work for a limited time, but it is unclear how long you will still be able to use it.
If Generative Fill is turned off, your credit score may be depleted.
To check your generative credit score, open Inventive cloud app, click on your account icon in the far right corner and find out how much credit score you have left.
For more details on Generative Credit Scoring, see this Adobe webpage.
This may seem strange, but being hooked to a VPN would likely prevent the Generative Fill feature from working.
If you’ve tried all of the above methods and Generative Fill is still grayed out, consider pausing your VPN or closing your VPN app, then giving up and reopening Photoshop to see if it actually works.
Last but not least, check when you have more than two PC techniques registered. Adobe implies that you will be able to access them simultaneously. two machines at the same timeIf you want to use it on a third-party software, you will need to log out of one of the first two essential software.
Now, here’s what could be causing your Generative Fill to turn off. Consider the following situation:
You have signed in to Photoshop on Laptop A and B. Now you need to use Photoshop on Laptop C and on Laptop C you authorize Photoshop and sign out of Laptop A, but again you find that Generative Fill is turned off on Laptop C.
The culprit? Laptop A isn’t just disconnected.
So what do you do? Go to Laptop A and manually log out. Then, on Laptop C, you give up and open Photoshop all over again.
Before the introduction of the Generative Fill feature, you needed to have some technical experience with image editing.
For example, as illustrated in one of our previous posts, removing an object requires about 6-7 steps and you need to understand which software to use.
And now, with the help of Generative Fill, all you have to do is tell it to remove something for you by simply providing a command or instruction.
And of course, Generative Fill can do much more. Check out the Generative AI artwork with Photoshop section of our previous article to see more of what the feature can do.
